Why We Built a Custom MUD Client Instead of Asking Players to Use Telnet, zMUD, gMUD, or Any Generic Client
For thirty years, playing a MUD meant wrestling with raw telnet, zMUD, gMUD, or generic clients, graph paper maps, and regular expressions. Here is how we built the Forged Realms client with live 3D floor maps, party frames, side-by-side gear comparisons, and a searchable Library right out of the box.
If you ask someone what stopped them from getting into a classic Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) or text-based RPG over the last twenty years, the answer is almost never the writing, the classes, or the dungeon design.
It is almost always the interface.
For decades, the standard onboarding experience for a traditional MUD went something like this: download a generic third-party client like zMUD, gMUD, CMUD, Mudlet, or raw telnet, type in an IP address and port number, and get dropped into a scrolling black window of text. Within ten minutes, you were lost in a maze of rooms with no map, trying to read your own health out of a fast-moving prompt while an experienced player told you, “Oh, you just need to import this 4,000-line script package and write a few regular expressions so you can see when your buffs wear off.”
When we—Anton and Augustus—started building Forged Realms, we knew from day one that we could not build a modern cooperative text RPG and then hand players a 1994 terminal window. If we wanted the prose, the dungeon exploration, and the party camaraderie to shine in 2026, we needed a custom MUD client designed hand-in-hand with the game engine itself.
Here is why we built our own client from scratch—and what changes when the game and the window speak the same language.
1. Keep the words at the center—and take the paperwork out of the scrollback
In a great text RPG, the room descriptions, combat narrative, and atmosphere are the heart of the experience. The problem with old-school telnet play wasn’t that the game was written in words—it was that everything else was crammed into that same scrolling text stream too.
If you wanted to know whether your tank’s Sanctuary was about to fade, how much health the boss had left, which exits led out of the room, or whether a new pair of bracers was an upgrade, you had to spam score, affects, look, and compare over and over again, flooding the very story you were trying to read.
In the Forged Realms client, the prose stays clean and readable at the center of the screen while structured live state flows directly into dedicated side panels:
- Live Party Health & Buff Frames: You can see every party member’s health, mana, movement, shield overlays, and class resources in real time. Even better, you can configure your watched buff checklist and click a missing or expiring buff directly on a party member’s frame to cast it.
- In-the-Room Occupant Frames: Every monster and companion in your current room appears with its level and live health bar, so you never have to guess who the tank is fighting or how close a boss is to falling.
- Built-in Combat & Healing Meters: Track group damage, healing, damage taken, and experience per hour without installing a single external plugin.
2. A true 3D multi-floor automapper built for vertical worlds
Classic MUDs were famous for sprawling dungeons—and equally famous for making you draw them by hand on graph paper.
When we designed the zones of Forged Realms—from the seven vertical floors and diamond biome wings of Elias’ Ascendant to the mist-shrouded granite switchbacks of Tien-Shan Citadel and the sunken coral ramparts of Thalassia—we built every zone on a true three-dimensional (x, y, z) coordinate grid with cardinal and diagonal movement (NE, SE, SW, NW) plus vertical stairs.
Because our client knows the exact geometry of the world:
- Floor-by-Floor Dungeon Maps: As you climb a tower or descend into a crypt, the automapper tracks your exact floor, highlights stairs and one-way passages, and lets you browse above or below your current level without losing your place.
- World Atlas View: Zoom out at any time to see how zones connect across the entire realm, complete with level bands and zone Forge drop rules.
- Pop-Out Follow Window & Safe Route Preview: Keep a compact mini-map docked beside your text, or pop the full map out onto a second monitor where it follows your character automatically—and click any room on the floor to preview a safe walking route or copy the directions for an alias.
3. Side-by-side equipment inspection and a 200-slot shared Account Vault
Finding loot in Forged Realms is meant to be exciting. Between handcrafted zone items, boss Mythic drops, and our six-tier dynamic Forged equipment system (Poor, Common, Fine, Superior, Exceptional, and Perfect), you are constantly discovering gear with new stat rolls.
In a traditional text client, comparing a new drop in your inventory against the two rings or two wrist items you are already wearing meant doing mental math in a scrolling terminal.
In our client, you can hover or pin any item in your inventory, equipment list, or Account Vault to open a rich inspection card. Choose which ring, neck, or wrist slot you are comparing against, and the card immediately calculates your Item Bonus Changes and Character Stat Projections side-by-side before you ever swap a piece of kit.
And because your characters share a 200-slot Account Vault, a shared bank, and account-wide Forge Shards, an Exceptional katana that drops while you are tanking on your Paladin can be deposited into your vault and withdrawn two minutes later by your Ninja.
4. A searchable in-client Library for items, mobs, and skills
Have you ever wondered where a specific piece of leveling gear drops, or needed to find a helm with Wisdom and Mana Regeneration for your Cleric or Druid before heading into a harder zone?
Instead of tabbing out to a decade-old fan wiki that might not even match the current game, the Forged Realms client includes a built-in Game Library fed directly by the server’s reference data:
- Search & Filter Equipment: Filter discovered items by wear slot, item type, usable class, maximum level, and zone—and sort them by the exact stats your build needs.
- Inspect Mobs & Drop Sources: Look up monsters by zone or level, see what equipment they carry, and click a source to jump straight to that zone on your map.
- Browse Class Guides & Help Entries: Every skill, spell, and class guide is searchable right inside the client.
5. Up to four character panes and zero-regex combat profiles
Whether you love grouping with friends or enjoy running a small party of your own characters on a quiet weeknight, the client supports up to four simultaneous character panes in a single resizable window (or popped out across monitors).
And when it comes to setting up triggers, aliases, key bindings, and opt-in combat routines, you never have to touch a regular expression:
- Visual Condition Builder: Set up class profiles for your Mage, Monk, Bard, or Warrior using clear dropdown conditions for health thresholds, mana, missing buffs, cooldown readiness, and class state.
- Account Settings Sync: Save your client layout, profiles, shared account aliases, and custom prompts to your account so your setup travels with you between Windows, macOS, and our browser build.
See it in action—and join us for Beta
We built this client because we believe a great text RPG shouldn’t ask you to fight the window just to reach the world. You can explore real screenshots of every panel on our Client Preview page, read our New Player Guide to see how a first session unfolds, or browse all ten Playable Classes & Remort Paths.
We are currently putting the finishing touches on Forged Realms ahead of closed beta. If you want to be among the first adventurers through the gates, sign up on our Beta Waitlist—we can’t wait to share the realms with you.
